In 1D space, there is no way to touch two ares that touch each other, any such attempt will either split an existing area in two, or it separates two previously touching areas.

e.g.: 111112221111222211111222

Similarly in 2D, it isn't possible to construct an area that toiches more than three touching area, without separating some of them, or splitting some of them in two.
