The first thing you should do when reading research papers is go all the way down and look at what affiliations the authors disclose and whether or not they have conflicting financial interests. Usually, you have to go deeper for that and look up where these guys worked previously.
There's too much bullshit, especially in medicine, being passed off as science when it is just pharma-funded crap or some other bullshit.

true but I rather think of microplastics that enters the body via open wounds on arms or legs. Alternatively, it may be very well possible for partilces in the range of micrometers to enter the body via lungs.
