Flight is a weird evolution. Wouldn't arms be more useful? Like their arms evolved into wings. I'm not anti-evolution, just that flight seems like a fairly difficult thing to evolve and the explanations don't seem all that good. One of the theories is that it came from animals running and jumping a lot. But humans run around a lot and no human, or ape or anything, has developed feathers or some kind of web between their arms and body. Webbed hands and feet sometimes, but that's more like a fish that a bird. There must have been a long period where the arms of birds were evolving away from arms but were useless but for some reason they kept evolving eventually into wings capable of flight

It fills a niche / has a competitive advantage. Isn't that the answer to all such questions? Some new agers want to sit and live on sun and air. They wonder why humans aren't plants. Or is being a mosquito not most intelligent? Just suck blood of other animals' hard work and reproduce many offspring.

Based mosquito realist. They also have wings. Truly solved life, stay mad non-squitos.

I'm not sure. Wouldn't the most competitive animal be able to fly but also have gills to breathe underwater and also have arms and be as fast as a cheetah and have echolocation and be able to see in the dark and have a hump like a camel to store water and be sentient and so on? Maybe animals are just so localised they only ever evolve one kind of advantage

No because all of that is too expensive

animals compete for niches, not for total dominance

You can't be the best lifter and the best runner at the same time because the physical attributes required for one work against the other. Same thing applies here.

Same reason why you dont build a vehicle that is very fast, can haul a lot of material, work as an excavator, transport 20 people, has a helicopter rotor so it can fly and swims so you can use it as a boat.

First they jump for tree to tree and then they glide from tree to tree.
