🧵 Basic Chem Q

Anonymous No. 16115705

Can anyone explain the broad strokes of converting from one salt into another.

I thought maybe It would require Salt1 - Base - Salt2 a broad explanation.

I mainly want the theory and mechanisms involved as a simpleton

Specifically it’s about Hydrochloride wanting to be Lactate, Citrate or Acetate.

In the absolute most vague sense of the word, I’ve “understood” HCl into a base.

Any beginner resource that would be enlightening or suitable.

>I've understood HCl into a base
bro what are you talking about?
combining a weak organic base, like acetate, with a strong acid is going to result in protonation of the weak base. The difference in pKa of HCl and AcOH describes the ratio between the two protonated species. There is a difference in about 10 units here, so 10 orders of magnitude. Combining equimolar amounts of something like sodium acetate and HCl results in a ratio of ~10 billion to 1 of acetic acid to hydrochloric acid. This is going to come out of the definition of pKa, pH, and the Henderson-Hasselbach equation.

That’s supposed to say HCl salts.

Dont lose your head.

I didn’t mean to, nor reference HCl Acid in any other capacity and I am aware of the non linear, logarithmic nature of the pH scale.

/S...

Let me start again at the very bottom
What about.. Sodium Acetate from a kids volcano experiment.
Acetic acid and Sodium Bi-Carb to Sodium Acetate and carbon dioxide

If I wanted to get Sodium Lactate or Citrate from the Acetate, what would I do?
What other information do I need and concepts to understand in order to work out how to:
Starting with the HCl or Acetate/Citrate Salt of something, get a different salt. Like the Lactate salt back to HCl or Citrate.

So I understand that Acetic acid reacts w NaC2 giving off CO2 gas and Sodium Acetate but want a more broader understanding of the theory and/or applying it to other similar sorts of things.
Rather than just “knowing” if I dump Acetic acid on Sodium Bicarbonate I get Sodium Acetate

Say I have an HCl Salt. I want to understand how to proceed, gather all applicable information and make my way through.. Knowing where to start to end up with the Acetate, Citrate or Lactate instead. How to go back as well as figure it out.

That sort of info.
Relevant resources on that sort of level.
I hope that makes sense. I don’t think I can simplify what I’m asking beyond that.

I’ve given specific examples but really it’s more an understanding of how and where to start in order to work it out, accounting for all the relevant info.

You could perform a salt metathesis reaction. React silver acetate with your Cl salt in water, AgCl precipitates, filter to remove, dry to crystallize.

Alternately, you could do what you suggest which sounds like free-basing and then reacting with your acid.

You might also be able to get away with reacting your salt with sodium acetate in water, then concentrating or adding miscible organic, or both. NaCl might crash out first, remove by filtration, then crystallize your product

You may have understood HCl into a base but I do not understand what the fuck you are saying
