She is kinda right, no?
I'm 3rd year chemistry PhD student and all the conferences I've been to and papers I've read are mostly useless bullsh*t. Including my own work. The research is only enjoyable if you are autistic, but the actual progress is done only in private sector I'm afraid. At least you can cope that you are educating students in academia.

You're in chemistry. That is different than theoretical physics. There is still a lot of useless bullshit since even mediocre graduate students still have to write a paper on something, but there is no private sector research.

Academia is going bankrupt.
This is a good thing.

Anonymous No. 16122538

There was a big difference between my grad school and postdoc advisors. Grad school advisor was very hands-on, did tons of actual research himself, and heavily rewrote my papers. My postdoc advisor did almost none of that. She wouldn't look at papers unless they were 99.9% done and would only change a few words and bam, another paper for her. Sure, as a postdoc you're supposed to be more independent but it was like this for her graduate students too. Even her grants were written by postdocs. It must be great having a job where all you do is teach, give perfunctory advice during group meetings and communicate your group's work to the public, while doing absolutely none of the real work. And she was getting tons of prestigious appointments and titles because she's a wammen. Oh, and she was hot. Best job in the world. I look her up sometimes and it looks like her group is falling off a little because her most talented people are leaving the group and the people coming in are not as good.

Best job in the world. I want to be a 9.5 wahmen in scianze who does nothing but talk people up about how great her research is while doing absolutely none of it and constantly getting promotions and attention and fame.

I have yet to hear anything from her that isnt well thought out and reasonable. Granted, I've only seen maybe 3 of her videos, but overall the impression I get is that she's both too intelligent and too sincere.

Her story really highlights precisely why in pretty much every institute in contemporary western society, at the top you find people who lack in honesty, integrity, and intelligence. They aren't total idiots (always), in fact some are quite clever. But the truly stellar minds and personalities get ground down and filtered out, leaving only sociopaths, midwits, people with no principles, or people who embody all 3 traits.

It is good she is bringing wider attention to this issue, because it is a truly depressing state of affairs that has become accepted as status quo. My opinion is that the need for decentralized systems is required as a solution to corruption and institutions that have forgotten their purpose. We see it in legal system, law enforcment, academia, financial institutes, private sector, etc. Basically administrators and managers have conflicts of interests with the general public and society at large.

Especially with the widespread adoption of the internet, I believe many previously unsolvable problems can be mitigated, and the current systems have yet to catch up and are still operating on dated principles, without any particularly good reason not to change. The reason they dont is solely because of money and power, and people with those resisting and opposing any change because new configurations necessarily holds the risk of loss of authority or financial income for this managerial class.

I believe the most plausible solution is going to be creation of what is essentially a parallel society, operating outside of the rigid confines of this old world and it's sphere of influence. For example, Terry Tao recently gave a talk on new potential way of working on mathematical proofs with much larger number of collaborators (1/2)

Anonymous No. 16122740

>>16122734
(2/2) Cathedral and the Bazaar also highlighted similar case with closed vs open source development models. Linux proved how robust and adaptable a decentralized sysyem can be. Yet another example of similar (or perhaps identical) principle can be found in the rise of ride sharing apps compared to taxi companies of old, or peer to peer car rentals, or food delivery.

Essentially, I believe real progress will be made when this principle is realized in new domains. Academia suffers immensely from still using antiquated model of resource allocation and decision making. Broader society suffers from this, actually. Sabine even touched on this briefly with her comment about having far easier time connecting with and getting assistance from people with particular knowledge on niche topics and subjects thanks to internet communities. Furthermore, with LLMs, huge compilations of resources, and essentially infinite copying of educational resources such as text books and instructional videos, there is compelling reason to think educational system at large could be altered to vastly improve access to the most competent subset of humanity. As it stands, old and established institutions are standing as an obstacle to innovation.

Better system will win across time as it readily outcompetes the old monolithic, centralized systems (which are more prone/less resistant to corruption). It's only a matter of time before this fact becomes apparent to larger number of population and they realize they no longer need the government or manager class.

It's diminishing returns. After 200 years of advanced chemistry, scientists have to apply 10000% more effort and a billion times more money to make only marginal gains.

Think about how simple of an invention nitroglycerin is, how much it changed the world, and how little it costs to synthesize. That's the power of the first mover advantage. It's like stumbling upon a goldmine. At first, you can pull value straight out of the ground with simple tools. As time goes on you have to get more and more complexity to extract even a fraction of that original value.

But it's not about men vs women, it's about power, and the fact that women on average are way weaker, physically, and mentally as far as ability of doing shit goes. Men just have it easier than women, in the power game. Hence they statistically hold most places of power.
Men are just as "misogynistic" with other men, which are as weak as women. Because what are they going to do about it? Cry?

Its just symbols, obviously it depends on the context and how those symbols are defined. I understand your frustration though, like I said, people often use this as some sort of "gotcha" as if it proves that 2 apples and 2 more apples don't give you 4 apples. Its a stupid and bad faith argument usually weaponized by people with a weak or tenuous grasp of mathematics, usually to then try and make some faulty conclusion like "we cant know nuffin" or "feels > reals" or something similarly inane. But it is indeed true that 2 + 2 doesn't always equal four, at least symbolically speaking it depends on context.
