Your current form is a focal point of consciousness father than an originator of it. Once this form can no longer hold that consciousness it will shift to another form as its focal point. However memory is a unique function for the current form you're in so it won't be retained in another form. So really being dead isn't possible to experience. Actually brain damage is exactly what does reveal the "secrets". Or a better way to say it would be that damaging or otherwise imparing your brain so that it doesn't function in the neurotypical way is a method to see outside of your own mind.
