if it was not the default state of being, it would have been selected against long ago. Yet it remains.

It's obvious yet controversial. The only reason to think and move (read: spend a lot of energy) is to gather food, acquire a mate and find a safe shelter to return to sleep.

Sleeping exists therefore it must be more beneficial than staying awake for 24 hours. It doesn't imply sleep is the default state of animals, it still could have evolved later after the brain.
