I noticed that after crying you acquire a sudden instant of clarity where you are able to objectively perceive and rationally analyze the situation that made you cry in the first place.
Is there a formal name to this phenomenon? What exactly happens from the neurological perspective?

Over-stimulation of neurons leaves them exhausted. This can occur anywhere in the brain including the emotional center. After a long period of strong emotion, the stimulation ceases to occur for a short period of time. This empty feeling can occur after orgasm, finishing a fist fight or after a deep mourning sadness. While not entirely scientific, this is the common explanation.

Clarity comes not only after crying but after illness as well. Stress narrows our perception, cognition, abstraction and reasoning because resources are diverted. When we recover these resources bounce back in a temporarily elevated state that broadens our perspective perhaps similar to psychedelics and meditation. There's also the default mode network meme. Dr. K talks about this.

Well the point of crying is to diffuse a cascade of intense emotion, so if the emotion's gone you see things more rationally by definition

Priority switched after fulfillment so the attention is no longer on that intense desire.
If you planned to fill your needs before panic sets in then you probably won't lose that rationality in the first place. And to make that plan you need rationality to think ahead. Shit feeds back on itself.
