I hate Gauß for coining the term "complex numbers". Previously based Descartes called them imaginary and stressed that they are not numbers but merely some obscure and ungeometric algebraic tool. Then Gauß came along and ruined math by declaring this abomination to be a field of numbers even though it clearly isn't.

but anon, imaginary numbers are a subset of complex numbers. both terms are in use and distinct in meaning.
