Coping with the fear of not knowing basic shit at Sun, 5 May 2024 01:37:56 UTC No. 16159973
How do you cope with the insecurity that stems from being unaware of the gaps in your foundational knowledge? For instance, you might feel overly confident when explaining a topic you're familiar with to non-experts, but when put to the test, you become insecure about your knowledge base and start wondering if you have significant gaps in it. Specifically, you might possess in-depth knowledge of a particular aspect of a field, but be largely ignorant of or have a poor understanding of related areas that are considered common knowledge even among non-experts.

I get that OP. My field is in stable isotope ecology, and while I know what I'm doing in the lab and the fundamentals surrounding isotope fractionation and other principles of the field, my actual chemistry is totally shit. I do things because I've memorised protocol and methodology, not because I know why it is I'm doing them.

>from being unaware of the gaps in your foundational knowledge
It's a cute slogan to pretend you "don't know what you don't know" but it's not true that people are unaware of the existence (and usually, even expression) of knowledge they've yet to obtain.
