The higher mental functions of imagination, visualization, memories and dreams are a byproduct of the navigational skills and spatial awareness developed by animals in their quest for survival. Namely the ability to see and the ability to remember must be the most primitive mechanisms that gave way to the rest of functions in this area. Therefore one must assume the experience of animals, including invertebrates, that can see and navigate is not different from ours.
