what would it take for someone in the distant past to realize that the sahara desert isn't traversable on foot?

It was traversable on foot in the distant past though?

i meant for someone unaware of its sheer size they'd die before even realizing they don't have the means to reach any significant destination. imagine someone who is prospecting the region for the first time.

People do this is middle Amerixa at day camp parks. Die almost in earshot of an interstate but they just walked in circles.

so how did people orient themselves in a way that made them aware of the sheer size of the sahara desert without trying to travel on foot since that would lead to them dying heat stroke?

I, too, do everything wrong in order find a new right (hand). Allah has two rights, I have one half of one left. Lol....lmao...
Also, desertification is an ongoing process, the Congo breaths in and out thousands of miles in timelapse footage. Giza used to be more green, the whole region was more plains than desert.
So...when?

Watch someone else walk into the desert and never return. You can then come to the conclusion that it's impossible to traverse pretty quickly.

Yeah, well...some Morties show up without Ricks.

Y-y-you know...maybe it was too good to come back, d-d-did you even think about that?
Like in the Lord of the Rings, Hobbits dont believe in fairy tales of far off lands.

You watch too many Werner Herzog documentaries about suicidal penguins.
No man and no animal is stupid enough to walk into what is obviously a death trap.
If you want to hear the actual mechanism, "not seeing any greenery or sources of fresh water on the horizon" is a pretty obvious heuristic.

In the distant past, the sahara wasn't a desert, and was traversable by foot. And it didn't become a desert overnight. For a very long time, it would have been small enough to traverse by even relatively unsophisticated travellers.

They figured it out over generations, learning where the water was throughout the sahara and going from there.

Any individual that lacks the capacity to understand the concept of having to travel back to the last safe place and having to account for likely hinderances on the return journey would soon meet their demise, albeit not in this very specific setting. This selective pressure led to the almost total expulsion of such inability from the gene pool. Thus it is safe to conclude that it took any individual uncapable of traversing the sahara desert a little bit less than half a fruitless journey of half the distance that they could manage before sucxumbing to the elements to decide to abandon the endeavour.
