This doesn't appear to have been targeted at him for being a scientist as the killer shot at ten or more people that day. I lived in that area in the mid 90s and went to Malibu State Park frequently. It was seen as a safe bubble up and away from the craziness of Los Angeles and the Valley. The problem with these types of bubbles is that they never last and the problems of the containment zone don't stay contained.

Haven't seen anywhere in any article that says he is an illegal immigrant. Obviously he's a violent criminal who can't exist in civil society but nothing indicates he was in the US illegally.

Not illegal, born in Tampa. And getting life in prison in any case, only got acquitted of battery on a sheriff's deputy. The man he shot happened to work for a multinational pharma company though. That's interesting.
