Lately many women who would be called mentally ill are finding gainful employment, purpose, and satisfaction as vtubers or other kinds of streamers (yes, including soft sex workers.)
Many men who would be called mentally ill find the same in very technical or artistic jobs, and have been for centuries.
IMHO the degree to which a society can absorb and redirect neuro-atypical people's energy into something productive is a measure of its maturity.
