๐Ÿงต Ozone layer

Anonymous No. 16180059

Back in the late 80s and 90s, did we stop the ozone layer damage by banning chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), or the damage never began in the first place?

How could there be a hole in the ozone layer if gasses diffuse evenly through a space?

We stopped further damage, and it has been slowly recovering.

> or the damage never began in the first place?
The damage happened and was quickly accelerating. Banning most CFC changes almost nothing in daily life because they're a simple convenience easy to replace. Only industrial shills and contrarians would thing that CFC were worth the problems.

CFC acts as a catalyst in the reaction 2O3 -> 3*O2, so their effect is very noticeable.

Genuine question, why don't we just manufacture a bunch of ozone and spray it into the ozone layer to replace what's missing?

Ozone is continuously generated and destroyed, if you remove the catalyst (CFC) that accelerates the destruction of ozone then it'll recover by its own, slowly...

The 'hole' in the 'ozone layer' would be one of the greatest shames of modern environmentalism if anyone remembered it.

The woman in OP's picture is using an aerosol spray can. Modern aerosol cans use different chemicals now, but decades ago the propellant chemicals in aerosol cans were blamed for thinning the ozone layer and causing a bunch of bad environmental effects as a result. Those same chemicals were in other things like air conditioners and refrigerators as refrigerants, but aerosol cans were the biggest culprit (since AC's and fridges are closed systems while aerosol is sprayed into the air) and became synonymous with damage to the ozone layer.

Please do us all a favour, fill a pit with propane, argon or CO2, wair for it to 'evenly diffuse through space' and hang out in there for a bit.

it was actually a great feat of international cooperation, we figured out the substance that caused the damage and banned it and now it's recovering
it's really rare for humans to cooperate like this but i guess since the substance didn't have a powerful lobby behind it (like oil for example or coal) it was really easy to switch from it

Also, I said evenly diffuse through A space, you dishonest cunt. Even in your picture, the gas in that box has evenly diffused through that space. It being held down by having greater density than the air around it doesn't change the fact that it has spread out as much as possible and as evenly as possible. The ozone layer is also kept together by air pressure, but the ozone in that layer will evenly diffuse throughout the atmospheric layer where it's trapped.

Except China has been releasing more and more of it because it's cheaper to manufacture polyurethane foam or something similar with CFC than without, and the ozone problem is worsening again.
