its actually exploding in activity right now due to the CAD->3d Print->Test->CAD workflow and a bunch of very good youtube videos with open source documentation for all the shit they do in it. also cheap chinese components like motors which are good enough for hobby stuff

In what timespan? Just by looking at the progression of Boston Dynamics from BigDog to Spot and the end of the hydraulic Atlas line you can see the progress, and that's a single company
