can anyone explain to someone with highschool level math what a hermitian operator is and how it relates to quantum physics. im taking a history of QM course and i have no idea what's going on.

there's no getting around the fact that a lot of interesting conclusions about QM require an appreciation of the math.

the important thing about hermitian operators is that they are linear transformation with all real eigenvalues.
hermitian operators represent measurements on quantum state vectors. the eigenvalues are the value you measure, and the eigenvectors are the associated pure quantum states w.r.t. the operator.

A Hermitian MATRIX where H = (H^T)* is the complex version of a symmetric matrix S = S^T, where the * is a complex conjugate.
Normal dot products between vectors x and y are represented as (x,y) = x_1 y_1+x_2 y_2+..., whereas in QM, the "dot product" (let's call it inner product) is more like <x,y> = (x_1*)y_1 + (x_2)^*y_2...

With Hermitian matrices and QM inner products in mind, notice that <Hx,y> = <x,Hy>. This leads to important stuff. Im watching a movie rn, i might type more later

A Hermitian operator is like a special kind of matrix that is equal to its own conjugate transpose.
Hermitian operators have real eigenvalues and orthogonal eigenvectors.
In quantum physics, observables are represented by Hermitian operators, ensuring that measured values are real and meaningful.
