I read Drexler's book when I was a teenager. I was kind of baffled by his talk of "gray goo." The world is already covered to a depth of multiple feet in goo. It's just not gray. It's green.

I think that Drexler's early predictions of grey goo where probably premature. Most assemblers will probably be working in specialized conditions or non-replicating ones designed for use in nature.
