Given all the technical limitations with batteries such as slow charge/discharge times, low energy densities, low numbers of recharge cycles and limited temperature ranges why isn't more research being done to develop better super-capacitors?

At a certain point, energy density invariably translates into ionization potentials. The plates of the capacitor start oxidizing, and effectively turn back into a battery again.
There is no fundamental difference between batteries and supercaps. It all boils down to which dense insulator can handle the highest potential difference without nasty side effects.

Quantum tunneling. It will always create a leakage problem for caps.

There are nuclear isomers, but pretty much all applications are classified because of 'muh gamma flash bulb' and 'muh baleotechnic explosive'.
