🧵 Is this OK for a first course in differential equations?

Anonymous No. 16201751

The preface says that knowledge of multivariable calculus and linear algebra are sufficient, but on various online forums it's claimed that an introductory course on ODE's is a prerequisite.

It's just normal 4chinlets behaviour:
You post any book, any album, any movie, anything... and ask for the opinion of faggots in this website, almost always the first few answers that you get are them saying that it's shit.

Why don't you just skim the first chapter to see if you understand it

You're a fucking dumbass, that book is shit, use pic related instead for your first course in ODE's because it has solutions to half the problems and it only contains around 300 exercises instead of the 4000 problems found in an engineering mathematics ODE textbook, also it's cheap as fuck from Amazon. Some idiot on Amazon said it was too difficult to understand but that is complete bullshit, ODE is just an extension of calculus 2 so as long as you didn't cheat your ass off in calculus 2 and actually did the work you'll understand everything in pic related textbook.

Just read it and find out, /sci/ is not your fucking personal servant.
The time you've wasted to be spoon-fed you could have already been reading it and realizing how shit engineer oriented books are.

It's not rigorous enough to actually use as a reference in research, use the one by Hirsch.
I honestly don't see why someone would be interested in ODE's when the really cool stuff can be modeled with PDE's

So many idiots itt. It’s a great book but I would not use it for a first course in differential equations. Normally people start with a course in linear ODEs before moving on to nonlinear ODEs (which is what strogatz covers). Go read a book that covers basic linear ODEs first and then move on to this book to cover nonlinear.

Which one would you recommend? Particularly one that follows these 10 principles: https://web.williams.edu/Mathematics/lg5/Rota.pdf
>>16202620
Where are you from anon? First time I come across that book. What are the math prerequisites to truly appreciate this book? Which edition do you suggest? I noticed the first one covers variational calculus which is of interest to me, but for some reason was dropped out of the second edition. Can I follow the 1st one despite all the errors/mistakes corrected in the 2nd?

I like tenenbaum but I think that’s more suited towards physicists/engineers. I’m not sure what a good proof-oriented book would be.

There is no book on the market that meets rota's requirements. Use the second edition
