Determinism is not really compatible with theism, since an all-mighty god could as easily change things up now as they did back when they created the universe. Determinism is not really compatible with modern science either, since it is based on classical mechanics and we're now at relativity and quantum mechanics.
To understand this you have to know about quantum uncertainty, the reversability of fundamental physical laws, and discuss the concept of causality in detail.
Randomness and determinism can be seen as the same thing, where is system is wholly and predictably determined from the outside. The universe does not have an outside, so it cannot be determined that way. Therefore it is internally determined, by itself. Therefore real scholars belive in self-determinism.
