Neanderthals "dying out" was basically them merging with homo sapiens. They still exist a lot of us are they.

If they lived among our societies and were heavily mixed with humans then no, there would be no real reason to classify them as a separate species.

I'm highly convinced that if abbos died out before the discovery of Australia, we'd be classifying them in the same manner other hominids because there'd be no political correctness in the way
