Eric Weinstein's case is pretty strange - there is a good possibility he's a crackpot but he was doing PhD in mathematical physics at Harvard, a lot of physicists and mathematicians know him personally, he's having public appearences with people like Roger Penrose, Max Tegmark etc. In the case of schizo uneducated crackpots like Terrence Howard the verdict is clear - the guy is full of shit. But Eric might actually be able to contribute something to science, but he seems to be trying to do it outside of academia and alone, because he took offense to scientific community. His story is pretty bizarre.

I've read a lot of eric weinstein and honestly it seems like hes onto something. I don't know if it's world changing, but it's like looking at a painting that's half flesh out, we need more pieces of the puzzle before we can decide if its trash or it's worth something. Clearly modern physics has led to a lot of dead ends and it's also sort of strange how they try to squash any alternative paths forward.

The fact that he has a Harvard PhD is nice and all, but a PhD is merely the prerequisite for starting your science career - he went on to do investment banking for Thiel, and after 30 years or so of that he's trying to convince people that he solved physics on the side, presenting a joke paper on Joe Rogan as evidence.
