Same reason our babies are born retarded while other animal babies just pop out and are already functional. Our brain is too big to fit through the hips and vagina so we are born prematurely before we become too big. It sometimes stresses the mother too much. You can also blame the lack of selection allowing women with weak and frail bodies to reproduce and survive pregnancy. I agree there is something unnatural about giving birth becoming a major medical ordeal. The price of civilisation and medicine is that our bodies no longer have incentive to stay strong, just like how animals that live in caves eventually stop wasting resources on growing eyes.

I agree with most of what you're saying except that medicine barely has any upsides for people living in the west, we have access to a much better alternative, which is an abundance of animal foods, we just need to eat more of that instead of the slop we eat right now

Victorian doctors used chainsaws to break mothers' pelvis if they became a problem. Now we do caesarean birth with anaesthesia and antiseptic. Mothers used to die or already dead during caesareans.
