After the discovery of Yamanaka factors in 2006 -> 2012 Nobel Prize, the driving urge to rip babies apart to get pluripotent cells died down a little bit since we showed in theory we can use these DNA factors to transfigure regular somatic cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).

A lot of research nowadays involves finding new unique factors to induce different types of somatic cells into younger states. Quite a bit of my own research involves trying this concept out with cardiomyocytes. This all sort of helps circumnavigate the baby mutilation issue.
