🧵 IQ science

What is the science behind IQ test?

This seems like an arbitrary set of parameters that someone created to claim someone is intelligent .

Who gets to decide intelligence?

Is the person that design the test intelligent?

How would we know? Do they take their own iq test?

What’s the science in this?wmh

they assess your pattern recognition and problem solving (allegedly). but generally they will only predict your performance on further IQ tests. astrology big brain midwits.

just make a bunch of puzzles of varying difficulty, give them to a group of people with time limit, put their scores on a bell curve with the middle being 100, and that's how you get their IQs

they don't use some arbitrary special questions designed specifically for intelligence, they just use a big list of questions of varying difficulty

IQ tests are backed by tons of scientific research, including modern neuropsychological research, which is why during the pandemic you'd see studies every so often reporting drops in IQ scores. The most vocal anti-test folks out there strangely had nothing to say about those pandemic studies.

People that design, give, and grade IQ tests can't take them, or at least can't get an accurate result from them. The reason why IQ tests are heavily abstract and test very basic things like pattern recognition is because IQ is an attempt to measure how quickly a given person can adapt to and solve something completely unfamiliar with no prior knowledge. Once you're too familiar with the workings of IQ tests it skews the result.

Basically IQ (intelligence quotient) is your age relative to your intellectual abilities. Meaning, if you are in the normal spectrum for your age, it should be ~100. People who are "smarter" are >130, and people who are considered "stupid" are <90. The average is ~110, i.e. we are all smarter than we should be at our age. Anyhow, IQ isn't the only measurement for your cognitive abilities, there is for example EQ (Emotional Quotient), for measuring your emotional capabilities. And there are different kinds of IQ Tests, most commonly problem solving, but also art, language, etc.
