Why do smart people (STEM) tend to be so cultureless? Nowadays at least.

You'd think your intellect would lead you to searching for beauty and having a more philosophically rich worldview.
But a lot of STEM people tend to be very cultureless and enjoy the dreg of pop culture like everyone else, no refined tastes whatsoever.
Their worldview is usually just the most basic materialistic worldview, held by everyone else. And they think all philosophy is bullshit, not worth indulging.

IQ? do you consider yourself cultured?

Are you seriously trying to convince us that reading Plato is more pleasurable and / or gives you more sense of meaning than watching pornography, jerking off, playing a videogame, searing a steak and such? If so you're not honest with yourself and imitating something that other people say you should do because reaspns.

I have worked in labs for extremely prestigious universities (Nature publications, etc) and have attended scientific conferences with Nobel laureates and the smartest scientists of our time.
With that said, lab work is, in general, your regular office job. You’re supposed to talk with your lab mates, your coworkers, about your weekend, meet them in the break room, have lab (office) gossip and politics, etc. Sure lab workers are talking about complicated subjects constantly, including discussing troubleshooting experimental problems, but they do so in a manner that is not unlike discussing why the printer isn’t working.
I am unsure how scientists’ personal philosophies have grown overtime, but I know that the majority of today’s scientists, even the smartest ones in the world, just want to be normal, relatable people

It took me five years to graduate undergrad with a degree in genetics and cell biology and this was my goal from freshman year. Math until calculus three. Chemistry until o-Chem 2 or 3. Countless genetics and biochem classes. Graduating in 4 years was impossible and the luxury of taken any but the most basic requirements for lib ed classes was only a dream.

That said my favorite class in five years was Scandinavian folklore and belief. Go figure.

I think the powers that be want this. People who are cultured tend to be more sociopolitical I mean look at all the philosophers in the past they changed the political landscape. Even newton participated in the enlightenment era.

This is dangerous for the elites and their power. Keep the people as stupid and morally bankrupt as possible for easier control

People nowadays tend towards being specialists, rather than generalists. In addition, overall people are reading less and less, which means less thought about deep philosophical issues. There is also the aspect that philosophy in general has the reputation of being useless for practical everyday things, as well as industry, and typical career options. There are only a few things in philosophy that have use, like ethics and philosophy of science, but only in very rare cases. Due to thinkers like Stephen Hawking, Richard Feynman and others, many people have realized that philosophy is in many ways obsolete relative to science.

> I.Q/credentials

I don't need to know what my "IQ" is, as it is not useful to me. The fact that you think IQ is the same thing as credentials is astounding.

The fact of the matter is, beauty is often perceived differently by many people. In my case, I have never associated beauty with anything other than living organisms. I have never found art to be beautiful, nor have I found any music to be beautiful, sunsets, grass, the stars, etc., ever since I was a child.

The reason why I say that beauty is overrated is because you don't need beauty to do mathematics, physics, engineering, philosophy, programming, and other thing that is intellectually stimulating. The way that beauty is perceived by humans, -- it seems that the only use for it is to give us a temporary but intense feeling of euphoria or pleasure. But if a person really likes a subject or object enough, they'll interact or think about it in some way, even if they do not find it beautiful.

when humans become city dwellers, they lose a lot of senses with nature
>the ability to escape, find or neutralize threats?
lost, so they seek action/scary entertainment
>the understanding of beauty and reproducing?
lost, globalized. so they seek entertainment that pleases them

I am le hecking STEM master race and I get constantly culturemogged by my whole extended family. I am the only man in 4 generations, and all my female relatives are career driven gigastacies who will just drive me into the ground in any discussion because their only goals in life are running shit, consuming vast amounts of literature and political theory and marrying intelligent but timid men they can boss around to produce more of them. I honestly wonder if they are aborting my male relatives and the only reason I exist is that my mother got emotional about it. Most of them was also involved in some kind of socialist organization in early life and they usually revert into "campus riot"-mode if you piss them off if they are drunk during family gatherings.

That is liberal art's job to cultivate the mind, strengthen the will, and elevate the spirit for the whole group. My group provided power, vehicle, communication, camera and touch screen to run the society as efficient and powerful as it can and what the fuck did you do with my labor? You created a welfare culture of that gives out freebies to everyone thus curns out and accept idiots, addicts, criminals, whores and degenerates for the way they degrades family and society and opens the flood gate to immigration and infintrate company and academic through HR and lowers all standards for diversity.
What thing liberal art touch that hasn't turn to utter shit, the more avant garde the shittier it gets? Who wrote the book, the history, the news, the oppinion, the script in a movie, the lyric of a song, the diahrrea of a paint, the trash of sculptures, and held this month's celebration. If stem degrades as fast as the culture on humanity's watch there won't even be an internet for you to post your faggot ass painting and contrarian opinion. We will all go to our mud huts and eat rabbits for dinner.
Heads will be rolling and piled in pyramids when an engineer gives out cultural and societal solution.

I've been through the tunnel of Western philosophy and circled back to atheist materialism. You can become a Neoplatonist or an idealist or whatever else, but once you've lost the ability to believe without skepticism it's pretty hard to ignore Nietzsche - and after that point metaphysics seems to be dead air.

Do you like baroque music? Will you tell the hoes on swipe apps with your spotify about it? Your digital storefront would benefit more from BAD BUNNY and MAH PUSSY.mp3 so you can demonstrate your soshial skillz. You have little avenues of developing these technical proficiencies like a refined pallate or tuned ear to the Well Tempered Clavier.
Streamflation killed culture. STEMbugs were cultureless redditors even in the 90s when the first MySpace pages started showing that backlog timeframe of accumulated CRINGE in the 2000s. Back then they had little exposure to the content that was great but obscure. I bet you they were dressed like goofballs singing Nickelback. Now it's even more crowded out and censored with groidtunes.
