Why is the universe black? The background of the universe. Is there up high something - do stars symbolize this?

Sounds like you're thinking about Olber's paradox. (Why is the night sky black if the universe is full of stars.) The answer is that the metric is expanding and light from distant places gets red-shifted into invisibility. Also the observable universe is only finitely big.
