🧵 The Dunning-Kruger Effect
Anonymous at Thu, 20 Jun 2024 13:32:14 UTC No. 16244076
I am aware that the DK Effect is generally descriptive of one’s personal growth through life, but we do see a clear inverse relationship between Socialization and Intelligence among the populace as a whole.
As an example, the low IQ union worker is far more likely to have a large group of friends and be married young, while the intellectual is far more likely to be a withdrawn, social outcast.
Why is one’s degree of socialization (confidence) inversely related to one’s intelligence (wisdom) ? what is the point of intelligence as an attribute if the majority of high IQ individuals in a society are autistic social outcasts?

You're attributing soical success to scientific outcome. A low IQ superstar could have a dynasty that lasts 300 years but do nothing of note to move humanity forward. A castrated high IQ monk could invent the steam engine and boom, the whole status quo is shifted.

>the low IQ union worker is far more likely to have a large group of friends and be married young, while the intellectual is far more likely to be a withdrawn, social outcast.
That seems to be anecdotal on your behalf, but sure, let's play along for the sakes of enjoying a an informal discussion.
>Why is one’s degree of socialization (confidence)
Hold on, that's not what confidence is. Confidence is the level of surety you have about how right you are about something you are arguing for or against, not how much you socialize or not.
>what is the point of intelligence as an attribute if the majority of high IQ individuals in a society are autistic social outcasts?
errr... again, bold statements, but for the sakes of argument, let's just accept that most nerds tend to be highly selective with their socialization. (I am also being far too permissive, and absolutely not confident about that statement)
The point of general intelligence is to discover true knowledge by analytically observing the world and testing hypotheses, and not specifically to divulge that knowledge. To spread that knowledge, one needs a particular type of intelligence, and a natural aptitude for clear verbal expression and enthusiasm (passion) for the act of transmitting knowledge to others. You must gain pleasure from teaching others.

Dunning Kruger is merely a matter of knowing how many questions are left unanswered in any given topic or subject. It has nothing to do with IQ or social skills.
When learning new subject matter, at the start you may have very few questions and answers to them may come very easily. So you think you know nearly all there is to know.
As you learn more you have more stuff to formulate questions about. As you discover more and more unanswered questions, you begin realize how little you truly know.

Dunning-Kruger is merely a statistical artifact and is not real

Evolutionary psychology explanation I’ve thought of for DK:
Confidence in your plan of action helps your enact your plan better.
On most subjects there’s strong beginners gains on the little knowledge you first get, this means most of the time your plan will be good enough even knowing a little.
Spending additional energy on learning a particular subject in detail offers diminishing returns for most subjects our ancestors faced.
Evolution thus favoured gaining a strong sense of confidence from learning a little, so you don’t waste energy on diminishing returns and carry out your crude plan well enough.
