I have a theory about dreams which nobody else seems to have ever mentioned. I submit that dreams are evolutions way of passing on knowledge to animals. Consider some of the most common recurring themes in dreams;
-Falling
-Being chased
-Being attacked
-Losing all your teeth
-Being humiliated in front of peers
All of these things could potentially lead to death or being ostracized. By dreaming about them, animals experience fear and subconsciously learn to avoid those dangers. The mystery of how animals "know" certain things, eg birds know how to build a nest, could also be explained if they learn this from dreams.
Thoughts?

Maybe but when bad things happen to me in a dream I don't get scared or upset, I don't really give a fuck, whereas if it happened in real life I would give a fuck.

why do I sometimes have happy dreams?

I don't think your theory is too far-fetched. As far as we know, dreams are just your brain's subconscious activity without the conscious filter. Your theory still works, especially considering genetic memory is a thing.

I think your theory doesn’t consider the bias of which dreams we remember and which we forget. Yes, these are commonly cited dreams, but are they common enough to be meaningful? Or is there a bias to remembering these dreams just because of how traumatic they are?
Your theory might suggest why these particular traumatic dreams exist, but not why dreaming itself exists. I dream about gay anal sex with anthropomorphic wolf men pretty much every other night, why would evolution want me to internalize that?

I had a dream where I had silky blonde hair and the "Karen" hairstyle, and talked to a doctor and pretended to be a woman. The doctor prescribed me a bunch of pills.
Thanks Evolution!

Evolution was not prepared for the dangers of modern life. Same reason obesity only really became a thing in the last 50-100 years. Ogg and Grogg weren't dreaming about trannies and furries because they were never exposed to that shit via the internet

It's an interesting idea, no doubt, I like it. Here are my comments: all those "realizations" first require real-life first-hand experiencing. For example, to know that falling down is bad, one has to first fall down in reality and get hurt.
Humiliation first requires to feel shame and embarrassment in real-life situations.

I've heard this a billion times before.
It may not have a disproof, but not a lot of positive proof either.
It could just be that dreams are things that you worry about anyway coming to light. I have more tooth dreams when I think about my teeth a lot, like before or after a dental visit.
