It is not a mirage, it's just what one would see if you were standing of a sphere the size of the Earth. Imagine you're a bacterium on the surface of a bowling ball, for example. Though the dimensional relationship between the bacterium and the ball isn't exactly the same as a person and the surface of the Earth, you can conceptually imagine easily that for the bacterium, the surface of the ball is effectively flat to its senses, and when it looks in the distance, it sees a flat horizon. And in order to see the curvature, the bacterium would have to be lifted away from the ball until the curvature became apparent.
It's the same thing with the Earth. But there are ways to tell it is curved, easy ways, that can be done everyday. As it turns out, the horizon is not flat, it is very gently curved, imperceptibly so, but with the right instruments, you can detect and see the curvature.
