How real is the meth formula in breaking bad according to science?
(sorry for my bad English, it is not my main language)

They leave out certain steps and chemicals used in the process and don't provide the exact weight of the reactants. And that's just the regular meth they make at the beginning. The blue stuff has little basis in reality (especially the coloring) and there is some genius chemistry that Walt came up with to somehow make the P2P method produce only one isomer (dextromethamphetamine) rather than the 50/50 split of isomers it does in real life.

The signature Heisenberg tek is just methylamine / P2P ("biker crank") and yields a racemic product. You only want the dextrorotatory isomer, so Heisenberg's tek can only max out at 49.9%.
Ironically the "shitty" psuedo and red phosphorous method they make fun of in the show only yields d-methamp and is as good as it gets for low-scale production.
What they really get wrong is the money. Meth is basically the cheapest drug on the market, it's like $35 a gram so unless you're on cartel scale you won't make money.

The first time I saw this picture with the filename "Heisenberg", I had never seen breaking bad nor knew anything about it, so I assumed it was some anon's best guess at what Werner Heisenberg looked like, complete with hat.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

Shake n bake is basically the only reliable method these days, people don't want to have take heaps of steps to manufacture Chems. Just use the shake n bake method, you get much more reliable yields

Hey-hey, here you go, kiddos:

Or just google "bucklin-cat-march-2004." It's pretty good, shows multiple methods on a small scale, but you've gotta do some googling on top of what it shows. It's public knowledge and not illegal to share outside of australia.

the better question is why anybody would give a shit about "purity"
purity doesn't give a better high. all it means is you have to take less to achieve the same result. in fact, walt's high purity product probably resulted in several overdoses since the meth heads he sold it to were used to lower purity, meaning they would take too much at once thinking they could handle it.

Because the impurities are more harmful than even meth.

The reason "purity" doesn't matter is because purification of existing salt is *by far* the easiest and least critical step of a manufacturing process (and "street drugs" are quite "pure" once you realize their fillers are added intentionally).
The focus on "purity" was just a focus on fashion - blue was good branding and Walter could pretend that the yield was pushed up (though reagent recycling in any such operation already obtains quantitative yields)

Actually being blue means it contained impurities, right?

Realistically, yes, but in the canon of the show it was the result to extreme purity. That's fine, it's a tv show.

In the alternate universe the show takes place in, chemistry is simultaneously more difficult and more interesting so it seems more like a plot device than anything

Why didn't Walt just start a chemistry youtube channel? There are several of those are they are quite popular, like that NileRed guy and his identical twin brother NileBlue. That would have paid for his treatment and then some.

In reality if you could isolate isomers at room temperature with purely chemical means, the wider pharmaceutical applications are enormous.

As someone who has watched these channels for over a decade: every one of them that tries interesting shit gets banned. Literally had to unsub another one last month.
Basic chemistry is black magic now. The drug trade narrative was part of the reason the show was compelling and why Walt even considered it to begin with.
