What books should I read in order if I'm interested in nanotech and molecular assemblers?

You will need a solid background in chemistry. Start out with general chemistry first. Then read intro textbooks on organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and analytic chemistry. Where do go at that point is up to you.

You should us be regularly reading and scouting the scientific literature for new ideas and concepts.

If you want a conceptual understanding of molecular assemblers, I would recommend Drexler's thesis, Nanosystems. If you want to have a high level understanding of rigid body based molecular machines, read chapters 4-13. If you want to read something that is more practical skip to chapters 14-16.

And if you want an idea on what so called wet assemblers could be like. I would recommend reading books on theoretical biology by Ganti, Calvin, etc.

If you want an understanding on the dry approach to molecular nanotechnology, reading up on surface science is a must. Understanding the in's and out's of scanning probe microscopy.
