Wouldn't it be more of an evolutionary advantage for Streptococcus to produce some kind of anesthetic effect in the throat instead of causing acute irritation? It's like a burglar coming into a house slamming pots and pans together you think with the evolutionary pressure of antibiotics at least one strain would adopt soothing properties?

The irritation is the result of inflammation, which is caused by your immune response to infection.

Inflammation is not only caused by toxins of bacteria and destruction of cells by viruses but also by the immune system itself that recognizes the presence of pathogens and the immune system accidentally damages your own healthy cells as well.

I know that I mean the strep would be more effective at ensuring it's own survival if it also acted like a lozenge and soothed the irritation you silly billy. I mean like there are many other pathogens that are able to "bypass" the immune system it's not impossible.

Every time somebody says "evolutionary advantage" I die a little inside.

>"bypass"
Targeting and usefulness are separate issues.

It’ll be alright, Anon. Take it easy. You’re a big boy and it’ll be over soon.

You're right. I got feel a ton better, doesn't mean I wouldn't prefer if it never happened in the first place.

The thing with analgesics is the dose, which is extremely hard for the bacteria to evaluate. Too little and it has no effect. Too much, and the host dies.
Strep bacteria live most of the time peacefully on your membranes. It launches an attack to deeper tissues when it senses that the immune system is weakening. It prefers the waiting game more than producing extreme toxins.

What's the evolutionary advantage of dying inside?

What you are asking for is precisely what is already happening. Viruses become less brvtal the more they are passed around, because those that cause less effects disable the host less.
