What's the lowdown on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)? Is it real or is it just a meme? I was interested in the concept but there don't seem to be any practicioners of it anywhere near me, and my own wife told me that she's technically CBT-certified with her MSW even though there was nothing in her curriculum about CBT, other than briefly mentioning it existed. Is this a real and legitimate branch of medicine or is it something that should be removed from discussion in regard to the sciences?

You're not miserable because you are a poor, lonely, ugly, abused, unskilled, malnourished virgin with nothing to look forward to and surrounded by soulless hedonistic and darwinistic machines who want to take advantage of you. Your problem is that you accurately perceive your circumstances instead of being delusional in an optimistic way and that's wrong because reality is not black or white it's just endlessly grey and empty of any judgement like your soul.

>miserable
somewhat
>poor
yes
>lonely
actually have a lot more friends at this age than I'm used to having
>ugly
I think so but my wife and mom disagree
>abused
yes
>unskilled
on a lot of skills, for sure but I do have a few skills
>malnourished
definitely
>virgin
you're close, I'm not a virgin but I've only been with one woman, who is my wife, and I was a late bloomer (lost virginity at 25)
>with nothing to look forward to
that definitely ain't true
>and surrounded by soulless hedonistic and darwinistic machines who want to take advantage of you
yes
>Your problem is that you accurately perceive your circumstances instead of being delusional in an optimistic way and that's wrong because reality is not black or white it's just endlessly grey and empty of any judgement like your soul.
I might have to ask Chat GPT to simplify this response for me, I didn't understand it

so this is /sci/ CBT?

It's sarcasm. CBT is barely effective and the reason why it's barely effective is that trying to change how you think and behave is window dressing.

for a lot of people this is true. aren't there some people out there who just experience a need for some neuroplastic reconfiguration? I had quite the paradigm shift when I went to therapy as a teen but there wasn't an ultimate fix that I received by going, but by simply taking the self-care step to go, I overcame depression and didn't need it after a while. I just want to know if CBT has any application, especially if with limited populations. I've heard it can work for rarer disorders and traumas

It's not the best, but it's a good framework to actually fixing your shit. Your psyche gets injured like other parts of your body. It's not like other medicine but it's what we've got atm.

it depends on who is administering the CBT. Obviously if it's a woman, you're fucked. if an actual intelligent person is helping you, your results will be better. but YOU also have to WANT to heal.
Life is either CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) or CBT (cock and ball torture).
The choice is yours.

On the one hand it is addressing black and white thinking patterns that are engrained in many people. Many people (consciously) adopt them because they tend to be useful to get ahead - such as fear of failing an exam. The alternative would be taking it too lightly, so you catastrophize it.

They have some data on effectiveness, but probably collected on simpletons with too much time. See picrel for a typical worksheet. I can't take this seriously.

On the other hand it's gaslighting sold as a therapy.
It becomes dangerous and abusive when they apply it to serious conditions, such as people with trauma. You can find experiences on the net about this.

I do wonder why it is pushed so much. Who is profiting?

Also, what psychology could be missing from previous psychological practices is that change is perhaps only effective on the subconscious level. CBT seems to implement solutions on the rational level.

(I might be in the wrong here, it is what I know after working through a book out of curiosity and checking a bit around for real life evidence.)

>YOU also have to WANT to heal.
People who want to heal are better served by treating the causes of the thoughts and behaviors that they want to change.

Change happens by spending time with people
that polarize you. You become more like them
if you like them and less like them if you dislike them.

I don't think the worksheet makes a difference either.
It's just something to pass the time. Bingo is equally
safe and effective

cbt is pretty much extensive journaling in order to get you out of what david foster wallace would call "autopilot" in his "this is water" speech.
you can technically do cbt as an msw, becuase most cbt comes in the form of worksheets.
just google cbt worksheets or cbt therapist aid.
i believe it was becker who did cbt and the becker institute still exists and you can pay them to attend workshops and get officially certified in cbt , but i think you need a graduate degree anyways.

cbt is basically asking what you did.
what you were thinking before you did it and the consequences.
its kind of like setting up the patient to condition themselves.
when it comes to cbt in a recovery model that ask you about negative thoughts, challenge you to reframe them. find alternative and asks to rate your willingness to do stuff on a scale of 1 to 10.

cbt is regularly employed in conjunction with exposure therapy to get over phobias. and it has some success with depression and anxiety.
they do have cbt for psychosis to help you understand and cope with your delusions and hallucinations.
