because the ecological niches of those animals still exist, but at some time in the past, their offspring found a novel way to survive. What happened is that new niches appear, and they are filled by new animals that evolve into those new niches.
Note that by "niches" it's not meant necessarily a new physical location, it just means a new opportunity to keep surviving in a different way.

Now here is the thing. in order to work with ''a population'', you need to use statistics. and statistics dont lead to proofs and even less to truths. Darwin's theory is not falsifiable and atheists are gaga about this, even though in public they say falsifiability is awesome. In fact, the atheist concept of a ''a population'' is not even well defined. At best you they come up with a fuzzy definition. So with darwin theory you get no predictive claims and when you try to get numbers out of it, you only get few stats about a population and if the theory fails, the atheists will say the numerical results are just statistical artifacts, no big deal. In fact ''truth'' is not even defined in statistics. So whatever atheists come up with with their stats, they can't say it's the truth.

who said that?

evolution does not mean that every species grows new, or loses appendages every X millenia... since reproduction and extinction events develop exponentially, there are phases where drastic mutations are naturally selected, and there are phases where subtle mutations are naturally selected.

e.g. mice where introduced by humans on an island without natural predators, they grew in size after a few generations. The mutation that causes bigger specimen is very risky in normal circumstances, as more food is required to survive and its harder to hide from predators. That's why mice don't grow in balanced environments, because the drastic mutation get's instantly punished by its environment.

now imagine that scenario but the mice are aquatic animals and the island is actually all available uninhabited landmass. Drastic mutations would've been rewarded a lot, because being able to scavenge on land gives access to uncontested foodsource.

I find it easy to imagine that "fish grew feet" in a relatively short timeframe.

I've looked into this human evolution malarkey quite a bit recently and discovered we're not any more sure today that humans evolved from apes than since the Darwin days. We've discovered a gorillion different species of ancient hominids but no scientists agree on which ones led directly to humans, much less be able to plot a direct line from ape to human over the last 10 million years. Everybody knows about Lucy, famous for being a human ancestor, but turns out the idea that australopithecenes were early humans is still very controversial in the scientific community. Not even scientists believe in human evolution.
