The mistake is the very first c^2. The internal diamond is a non-square rhombus in the general case (when a =/= b), so c^2 isn't how you calculate its area. Your calculations work for the a = b case.

No. The figure with four sides of length c isn't necessarily a square. It looks like a square in your drawing only because you've made a and b look like they're equal. The figure is in fact a rhombus, so you have to use one of the area formulas for a rhombus.
