I thought those cult-like behaviors were recent. However, from listening this interview of Brian Keating, I realized that academia has always been tribal and dismissive toward anything they deem "not trendy" and "heretical". This guy David Albert almost got sacked from his PhD by his own physics department because he wanted to research a topic that were forbidden at the time. Not even right, not even wrong, not even a religous topic in a physics department, it's just that the topic wasn't trendy: shut up and calculate dominated at the time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciL
imagine all the cults in science: climate change alarmism, gender studies, gender queer bullshit... we have now. how worse it is compared to 50 years ago. I realize that maybe not, maybe it has always been this way and the reason we're making a fuss out of it is because it's starting to affect our daily lives.
