Could someone please help me here? I understand the basics of how a swing works, e.g. it converts between kinetic energy and potential energy. However I do not understand how a kid can play on the swing ~infinitely? I assume the kid with the swing is considered a closed system thus no new energy is introduced from the ourside, yet the swing does not stop. Clearly this is not the case, but where does the extra energy come from?

This is probably it, but how so exactly? How does leaning back and forth converts energy stored as sugar converts to kinetic energy?

You are leaning and dangling on it, using one pendulum to power the other.
