Because he was an og back in the day. Also he was less of a science man and more of a "here's a collection of factoids" man. Brainlets ate him up.

this guy, hank green, vi hart, asap science, etc. are the group of youtubers that made me hate "nerds" and stemlords as a kid, but looking back, at least their faggotry felt a little genuine.
now everyone we look up to is some grifter or lifeless, self-hating grinder.
very much a millennial vs. gen z approach to science communication, i think.

He rose to prominence before the age of snark and hatred. Back before optimism had been slain for profit.

it's the adam conover type "um, actually, did you know about this cool factoiderino?" proto-"neurodivergent tiktoker" infodumper part that annoyed me. i like it when people (especially kids!) are excited by the world around them, but there's an added smugness these guys bring that's kind of hacky.
of course, that's definitely preferable to the "i study in a room without windows for 18 hours a day because tiktok is brainrot and we need to go back to trad oppenheimer wwii aesthetic science" well that zoomers are digging themselves, and it's a lot more practical than cosmos, but i like the messaging of cosmos.
i wish we had more shit like cosmos.
