In our previous thread, someone typed the following question:
>Why did the Permian stem mammals have sailbacks?
Does anyone have an answer?
Synapsids and whether or not they had "sails", how many did or not, and what their function was isn't really my specialty nor area of interest.
>Thermoregulation was disproven by simulations, and structural support is the only theory that makes sense
Again, not something I follow at all, but sexual selection might have been a big factor, I'd not be surprised.

Mandatory picture of non-mammalian dimetrodon.

>but sexual selection might have been a big factor
It usually is with extravagant structures that get in the way and take up a lot of space and energy

is that so? I fail to see how such a sail area would not be of extreme importance for the animals thermal equilibrium. It's a huge surface area that would gather the sun's early light and get the animal warm and ready for daytime activities, for example.
I'm not finding anything "disproving" the thermoregulatory hypothesis, does anyone have anything on that?
