Is there a scientific reason for why Red is used for passion or is it entirely cultural?

It's the color of blood and pussy; pinkish red specifically, but red in general flips the switch in your brain.

Technically magenta could come close but it has less "raw" passion in my opinion, so nothing beat red.

Red is a two-sided color, at one side you see it associated with anger, pain, danger and even evil, on another side you see it associated with vitality, love, lust, and what makes us alive.
In my opinion, Black should have been the color of evil as it represent the total absence of light whereas Red is still a color on the spectrum.

a better question is how come we came to associate blue with boys and pink with girls?
blue and pink aren't even opposite colors
if we were to follow an "opposite" code then the opposite of blue would be orange, which mean that orange would be the color femininity
on the other hand, the opposite of pink (magenta) would be green, which mean that green would be the color of masculinity

when humans are aroused, blood rushes to the face and we turn redder. lips get bigger. genitals get swollen, and again, redder as a result.
red is the colour of arousal.

I think brown colours are not appealing because they viscerally excite less interest. As humans in an earlier state of development, and even just as animals in general, most of the brown in our visual space would just be dirt, which is both common and of no value. So it makes no sense for it to arouse our interest. By contrast, red is relatively uncommon in nature and is the colour of flesh and blood, so it's useful to have a strong reaction to it.

funny tidbit, my native language has two words for 'red', originally to convey these different meanings. today's speakers treat the two words as synonyms, but a great shitload of inherited turns of phrases attest to the distinction having been operative in even the recent past.

it's difficult to wrap your mind around, but color is not something that is objective. yes, colors may be correlated with measured wavelengths of light, but this does not mean anything about the subjective perception of these wavelengths. the subjective component of color perception is evolutionary signaling, like a user interface, to be drawn towards or away from things in the environment. when you look at color in this way, you will understand why each elicits different feelings about something. because its not the color, it is our minds that is interpreting the meaning. of course, this extends into the socio-cultural landscape as well, reinforcing these patterns at the more conscious level
