This problem from an intuitive physics test by autism researcher Simon Baron-Cohen asks which gearwheel is spinning fastest in this gear train. According to the test form, the correct answer is W, with the supposed reasoning behind it being that while W has the same diameter as Z, X is spinning faster than Y, so W must be faster than Z. This is incorrect because for the gears to mesh together, which they don't in this picture, the teeth must have the same size, and therefore the "teeth per second" at each interface is the same for all gears, and the gear speeds depend on the number of teeth, which depends on the diameter, so W and Z are equally fast. I have verified this in this gear applet:

Isn't the gear ratio multiplicative over chains of gears? So, the terms coming from the gears in between W and Z cancel out either way (independently if we look at teeth or diameter), therefore getting a ratio of 1/1 between the small ones? Or am I missing something?

That's right, someone in a previous thread also worked it out like this.

Congrats you have autism.

>This problem from an intuitive physics test by autism researcher Simon Baron-Cohen asks
Jewish autism researcher who conflates good pattern detection capabilities with autism. You can decide. Is this a fraudster trying to sell questionable diagnoses to you based on fallible reasoning or are they trying to pathologize people who are good at detecting patterns?

>X is spinning faster than Y
Bad way to think about it. As X makes a turn W makes several turns and Y makes a partial turn, but the distance traveled by a point on the rim is the same for all, so Z will have turned as much as W=be equally fast.

Wasn't this also the same guy who developed the "male brain hypothesis" of 'tism?

What does "fast" refer to? Angular velocity, or velocity of a tooth?

>As X makes a turn W makes several turns
Incorrect. They have the same number of teeth and therefore when X makes one turn, so does W.

I mention his religious affinity because autism is now used to divide and conquer people. You can figure how it relates to him.

Gear teeth don't have to be the same size else wear and tear would make gears not work, plus it is impractical and expensive to have 0 tolerance features.
