this is one of the most decent institutions in China. it's probably not total bullshit. It's like hearing popsci news coming from a university like Cornell. probably there are a lots of nuances that are missing here and the marketing teams just ran with whatever grab the most attention.
however, this isn't something that completely new either. I remember hearing this kind of cultured in-vivo brain do this kind of thing before but it's really not that impressive when you go down into the detail, lots of hand-holding from the researchers and the brain organoid actually didn't do so much.

It's completely real. We've known how to train neurons like AI for a couple years now. The tricky part is keeping the neurons alive and hooking them up to electronics. Shit is about to get real.

it's sounds really meh to me. and there isn't any breakthrough that came from this either. I bet ya the thing that came from china in the OP is something similar to this and will turn out to be a nothingburger as well.
Anonymous at Sun, 7 Jul 2024 22:02:21 UTC No. 16272030
>>16272014
to add more context why it meh to me: you can see the video of the behavior and the graph of the result the author put into that video.
the behavior by those neuron are barely better than random. they're doing something but are they really doing things that we think that they're doing, namely playing pong? and they're not doing really well either. the environment is extrememly simplistic and easy. some random configuration or interpretation of the neuron signal might just give rise to that kind of behavior easily.
then you check the result graph after 20 minutes of training, it's totally inside the error bar of the initial result before the 20 minutes training. are they really sure they training did something or it's just random behavior??? if you repeat their experiments multiple times you can easily get that kind of results just by pure chance lmao.
in fact, now that I rewatch it again, I think the work in that video is actually total bullshit.

What do you mean there was no breakthrough? This was the team that figured out how to train neurons in the lab for the first time (the mechanism has been hypothesized for a long time, however). Previous studies were just tricking the neurons to form precomputed circuits. The team behind that study started a company and lots of people have started working on this.

ok, their new work (here: https://newatlas.com/computers/hybr
is actually better.
however, I'm still not very impressed. their result is still kind of trash and it looks still barely better than random to me on many of the tests. are you sure they're not overfitting to their validation set?
they have comparison to ANN and linear regression but I'm 100% sure their version of "baselines" is totally intentionally garbage to make their brain organoid looks better. those are easy problems that ANN can solve in just a few minutes of proper training.

The ethnically homogenous country with a larger population and a higher average IQ will produce more scientific breakthroughs than the multiethnic country with a lower average IQ. We're not talking about the America of the 1960's. We've sacrificed science for the religion of equity. We've become far less meritocratic and it shows.

The US was and still is on the bleeding edge of innovation. The only reason some European countries and China are catching up is the declining funding and interest in public education that has been a problem since the 80's. It's not because segregation ended, or because more brown people are coming over to work as cooks and housekeepers.

Actually there is because NDEs are seriously irrefutable proof that heaven really is awaiting us all because (1) people see things during their NDEs when they are out of their bodies that they should not be able to under the assumption that the brain creates consciousness, and (2) anyone can have an NDE and everyone is convinced by it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U00
So every atheist or materialist or agnostic would be too if they had an NDE, so pic related is literally irrefutable proof of life after death. As one NDEr pointed out:
>"The minute that I kind of woke up on that hillside in heaven I knew that that was more real than any time I've ever spent here on Earth. And I knew instantly that my time here was really but a dream. It's real to us when we're in it, but once I was there in heaven I realized that's more real, that felt more real, and it made much more sense to me than anything here. This is kind of nonsensical at times. In heaven, it's so clear, so real, so rational, so logical, but yet emotional and loving at the same time. Immediately I knew that was real and this was not. Immediately."
If NDEs were hallucinations then extreme atheists and neuroscientists who had NDEs would agree that they were halluinations after having them. But the opposite happens as NDEs convince every skeptic when they have a really deep NDE themselves.
So NDEs convince people who have them, and so does the extensive scholarly literature on NDEs for the people who actually reads it. The problem, however, is that so many pseudoskeptics never actually read the scholarly literature on NDEs and instead just assume, based on their materialist dogma, that since there can not be any evidence for the reality of NDEs, there is no point actually learning more about NDEs.
And NDErs say that God does run the afterlife and heaven.
That biology is complex != There being no God.
