How do I make a computational model of a fission reactor? What is the best level of abstraction for acquiring a wholistic view of the operation and function of a reactor from the fission reaction through to the electricity generation by a turbine?

How's this? It even runs in the browser. Just hit the play button, then the pause button. It's automatic so you gotta wait for it to prime itself, but after a minute it'll start making steam and electricity.

But can it test whether the turbines will hold spin long enough in case of a power failure to power the cooling system until the diesel power backup kicks in even in case of a poisoned reactor core?

No? I am not a professional at modeling nuclear reactors, but you might just want to calculate how much kinetic energy the turbine has and how fast it will lose it the old fashioned way. You know how many seconds your diesels will need to start up right?
