For less strain on an A.C unit, would it be better/more efficient to run the AC at a lower temperature and keep the house colder, or to let it run at a higher temperature.
I'm thinking about the stored energy/thermal mass and if letting it run colder the AC will work less hard as the house and everything in it is already colder/had it's energy removed.

Keep it off. Lowest strain.

Normally you would consider energy cost rather than efficiency alone. Off-peak is way cheaper

>Get a electricity plan that changes price per hour
>when electricity is cheap, pit AC at full blast
>house goes to 55F at noon
>when electricity is expensive, turn AC off
>house goes to 70 at sunset
It actually works

It would be more efficient to replace every building material in your home with brick/stone. Less thermally conductive.
