when will I learn how to come up with those really complicated-looking bounds? you know the ones: a dozen seemingly random roots and transcendental functions slapped together in chaotic form to assert a bound on some prime divisor or some shit. I thought I'd start learning in my junior-year RA class, but it's turning out not to be what I thought it was, so is it postgrad analytic number theory or something else?
god bless.

I have no idea. Finished my master degree without ever encountering special functions.

Did you ever take an introductory proof-writing class? That helped me make that leap. I used the Vellman book to study on the side. I was kinda shit at math and just was able to grind hard for good grades at that point, so you can do it to for sure.

not that useful in general. Algebra and geometry are far more important

jfc, surely someone can actually answer OP. I'm not a math guy, but I know what he's referring to, and I think it is indeed analytic number theory in which you learn to dick around with like...
>the gap is at most [whole bunch of exponentials and logs and trig functions and blah that make you wonder how the fuck someone came up with that]
I think there's something with sieve theory too. I dunno. Math dudes need to chime in, but this board has gone to shit.
