There's probably a sweet spot around 6' to 6'3 where you are reasonably taller than the others without already entering either freak zone or physically unhealthy zone. And I do really beg the question, having known a couple of people who were a head taller than me, and I'm already close to 6' (yes, not quite I'll admit). Is being formed like a pencil preferable to having a normal build for the sake of some inches?

Back in the day you didn't get social media so people would have to talk to you at face value. So short and average people would face adversity due to it, moreso the hobbits, and they'd already have a built in cynicism. The association had nothing to do with them being tall, but more to do with them being treated more respectfully by normal people, if not desired by normal women.
Ergo, tall people are happier and better treated so they don't have to try harder. They also get more intelligent and better looking because intelligent good looking women prefer them every generation, stopping only when they're too tall to be healthy (areas that faced more famines have shorter people).

So...no, there was no basis, just cynical cope over tall people being happier.

It makes sense because they already have heart and circulation problems so imagine trying to pump even more blood to your brain and stress your body. That's why they have slower reaction times and most seem like they are out of their mind. Most people don't comprehend how difficult it is to maintain such a body and what amount of resources it requires compared to an average person.

I'm 5'10" and I knew this dude who was 6' but the height difference between us was literally entirely in the dude's neck. From the shoulders down our bodies were similar but it was like he had an extra vertebrate or something in his neck. It looked goofy as hell.
