Because there's a clear difference between hearing voices as a medical pathology vs hearing voices because you're thinking.

One of them causes distress to the person, while the other is a normal activity, and indeed the medical diagnosis takes into account how much personal distress hearing the voices causes you along with other factors like mental functioning.

This is how a realised I had tinnitus. I thought silence was an abstract concept to refer to lack of noises, not an actual thing. A friend of mine was telling me how her mom was always hearing this high pitch sound and I replied: as we all do (I was around 11)

What? It's inner voice?

I told my psychiatrist that I hear voices because our house has too thin walls, and he wrote it down as "hear voices" and diagnosed me schizophrenia!

I think mistakes like that tend to happen with autistic people who take things too literally. However, I highly doubt your story is truthful as typically the doctor would do a much more thorough assessment and see that you don't actually have schizophrenia.
