wildifre mitigation and avoidance campaigns are responsible for the drops up to 1960 and the lull thereafter. Global warming is responsible for the increase you see in your chart from 2000 onwards.
We also have much better technology and knowledge about how to avoid and control wilfires.

Eco-terrorists are constantly getting busted starting wildfires in hope of creating the false impression that global warming is destroying nature.

Just a small rant that has nothing to do with the topic. News sites are dogshit, why dont they mention what evidence was collected? "We got data and it definitely points to this thing, trust us bro. Just dont ask what that data is". What is the point of news if they dont ask organizations to give any information except the conclusion they came to?

now you're being paranoid, anon.
Wildfires are more frequent and more intense now (but also more controllable thanks to better technology) for three reasons:
1) the herbivore fauna that used to trim the bush (deer, goats, etc) is much reduced due to too many factor to list here
2) additionally, decades of wildfire avoidance campaigns and practices have left forests with much vegetation litter and bush. i.e. fuel
3) global warming and the extra heat it brings is drying up many regions (not all, obviously) and so there's more dry tinder to burn
